Community of
practise
When I have graduated from university,
I would like to work as a graphic designer. I have decided to select this
community of practice because, it allows me to work on a range of different
outcomes. I love making a visual statement that represents more than just what
is shown. I want to work with people and sum up everything that they, or the
company stands for in a piece of art that conveys emotions and a message. I
love producing clean crisp looking final pieces. In most graphic design briefs,
you must work within a client's boundaries; however, in my opinion, within
these boundaries you have the flexibility to put your own stamp on the piece
and to unleash your creative flair. I take pride in all my work and enjoy the
development process from initial idea to finished piece. I feel graphic design
is a necessity and without it the world be a less exciting and dull place. As I
am a very creative person, this industry will allow me to use my imagination to
create stimulating pieces of work, which is visually pleasing and communicates
a clear message to the viewer.
The consistent brief change means I
could be producing book design one day then doing a typographical piece another
day. There is a lot of possibilities and consistent brief change is something I
enjoy. Eventually, I would like to specialise in either Brand
and Advertisement developer, Medical Illustrator or Art Therapy.
The research stage has made me more
aware of how I need to be professionally. I need to be able to problem solve,
work as a team and independently, along with other aspects. I also need to be
able to work across various Adobe Software. One of them is Adobe Illustrator, I
knew this was something I needed to develop while I was doing the project PDP
(115AAD), so I am currently doing my add+vantage based on that subject. The
research has made me more aware of why I want to be a graphic designer rather
than specialising in a specific area.
For this career path, I need to have an
up-to-date knowledge of industry software and a professional approach to time
management, cost efficiency and deadlines. Career opportunities can be found in
major cities such as London and Manchester. There is also a demand for British graphic
designers internationally within Europe, Japan, Australia and the USA. Most
employers are looking to hire people that have experience within the industry.
However, involvement in live projects and a strong portfolio of work is also
important.
The work environment is based within a
studio. The studio is usually shared due to some projects being team work.
However, I could also be working alone on some occasions. The majority of
design work consists with working on a computer for long amounts of time, it
can also include hand printed designing. This type of work environment is
suited to my personality.
