Manchester disrupt trip

18th October 2018 - 19th October 2018

DM18 DISRUPT; speak up, speak out and do something a bit different. The organisers felt that now is high time foe a shake up in this most special of cities, particularly in light of the rather sad-looking, mediated future we seem to be facing. Design Manchester 18 will hear from all brightest and best creative disruptors from every conceivable field, all with the aim of encouraging us all to forge our own creative paths through the gloom.

Some influential people that where there

  • Anthony Burrill – Globally renowned graphic artist, print-maker and designer
  • Kate Dawkins – Founder and Creative Director of Kate Dawkins Studio, London.
  • Matt Ipcar – Executive creative director at Blue State Digital. Principal design leader for both Obama campaigns
  • Michael Wolff – Co-founder of global design agency Wolff Olins

Day 1: University of Salford

The 1st day was an early one! I woke up at 5am to start my travel with my friends, we decided to travel separate to the university which was the better option however, we did not know this at the time. We managed to get to Manchester early and the other students that were traveling with the university, were stuck in traffic making them 3 hours late to the first event! The day was amazing. it really opened my mind to new ways of creating work. It also pushed me to rethink my working process and how I should start incorporating more hand made aspects. This day was spent at University of Salford where we has 2 main speakers 'Ian Swift (Swifty)' and 'Malcolm Garrett'. Below are some images from the event.

Day 2: The DM18 Conference: D(isrupt)M

This was another early morning but not as early as the morning before. We spent the day in Bridgewater Hall from 10am until 6pm listening to multiple speakers and taking part with workshops. This day allowed me to hear from some of the most amazing people from the design world. I can honestly say this trip was life changing in my joinery to a Graphic designer.

However, I kept on looking even with these minor set backs and I have now found some placements that I can apply for. 12 month placements DISNEY - Creative & Product Development  https://jobs.disneycareers.com/job/london/internships-creative-and-product-development-2018-19/391/5832619 UNIVERSAL - Graphic Design Intern http://jobs.jobvite.com/universalmusicgroup/job/ofZm6fwq Both of these 12 month placements are amazing opportunities but this is not what I am looking for. I want to either have a placement over the given time during semester 2 (March -May)or, have a summer placement. Due to this, I decided to research local design agencies in Coventry. Here are the three I liked the most. These three design agencies would help me develop professionally b...
